Off-road vehicles are enjoyed by residents and visitors all over Yavapai County, but a recent serious accident reinforces the need to make sure you do it with safety in mind.

On July 17th at 9am east of Cordes Junction, an 80-year-old resident of Mexico was critically injured when he was ejected from a Polaris Ranger and struck his head on a large rock. The victim, who was visiting family, was driving the UTV when the accident occurred, and apparently meant to hit the brake, but pushed the accelerator instead and struck a fence. Deputies said he was not wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred. He was listed in critical condition in ICU after being airlifted to the hospital.

YCSO has had other reports of off-road vehicle accidents this summer, including some involving youngsters. Thankfully, the majority of the accidents did not involve serious injuries. We are strongly encouraging all off-roaders to follow or even go beyond the legal safety regulations. For example, seat belts are required for all front seat passengers and all passengers under 16, but all off-road vehicle drivers and passengers should consider wearing them to avoid potential tragedy. Also, helmets are required for those under 18, but all drivers and passengers should consider wearing them to promote overall safety.

Enjoy your outdoor off-road activity in Yavapai County, but please make sure everyone in your party is safe.
