A 1966 Prescott High School graduate has been elected the 2024 Captain of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse (YCSMP).

David Phare and his family moved from Oregon to Prescott in 1953. After graduation from PHS, Phare attended Arizona State University until he was drafted into the US Navy in 1969. Following four years of service to his country, Phare attended Yavapai College and Northern Arizona University. After graduating college, he moved back to Prescott to help his father’s building material business. He also worked for various other companies, most recently one which provided food service to the Yavapai College Prescott campus.

In 2007 he joined YCSMP, serving nine years as Treasurer and eight years as Membership Chairman, before being elected to the leadership position.

YCMSP members also voted Ron Mayes, who spent three decades with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, as 2023 Posse Member of the Year.

YCSMP provides many scholarships including $500 to deserving Yavapai County high school seniors who plan to attend Yavapai College. Last year the Posse handed out close to $40,000 in grants to local students. The 2024 deadline to apply for the scholarships is April 6. For more information, contact Chris Hill at 602-320-3430.
