YCSO welcomed 15 new Detention Officers to the agency, following the academy graduation ceremony for Class 3 of 2024, held October 25th in Prescott.
Keynote speaker Chief Deputy Jeff Newnum told the graduates that "the strength of a democracy and the public's quality of life are due to the public safety presence of law enforcement" and urged the new detention officers to "be an example and take pride in the badge and uniform you wear." Chief Newnum stressed the importance of having a "servant's heart, putting others above yourself", and also urged the graduates to "serve with meekness, which is absolute strength under control." The Chief, who has served at YCSO for nearly three decades, told the graduates to always remember those who came before them in the 160-year history of YCSO, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice and are included on the Law Enforcement Memorial on the Prescott Courthouse Plaza.
Class Leader William Slusher, in his speech to fellow graduates and the family and friends who gathered for the ceremony, pointed to the fact that "we faced many challenges, mental and physical, and we became a family. We each had to earn it, and we did." Slusher won two awards for Academic Achievement and Physical Fitness. Other award winners were Benjamin Lawler for Overall Honor, and Nicholas Miller for Improvement in Physical Fitness.
The other 12 graduates were Tyler Crain, Dalton Fortney, Jacob Gietl, Tyler Harris, Ellis Holliday, George Jeffries, Dustin Oen, Brian Olson, Benjamin Palm, Dylan Priest, Cindrella Richardson, and Earl Williams. The class motto was "No Excuses, Just Results".
