A YCSO deputy on duty in Cordes Lakes January 26th noticed smoke nearby, and upon investigation, found a garage at a home on Sierra Drive engulfed in flames. He and other responding deputies insured the safety of the homeowner that night, but that's not all. When they were notified that there was a dog in a kennel outside the back of the burning structure, they quickly jumped into action.

Using bolt cutters to gain access through a locked gate, the deputies ran to the kennel area and rescued the pet before the flames could reach the animal. They also notified nearby residents of the large nighttime blaze and were able to evacuate neighbors until Mayer Fire Dept personnel had the fire safely under control. Thankfully, no people or animals were injured, and no additional structures were affected. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
