"YCSO welcomed four new Detention Officers to the agency following their recent academy graduation. The newcomers are Lee Johnson, Armon Karbassion, Hector Miranda-Torres, and Adam Sanchez.
Detention Services Commander Tom Boelts told the graduates and the crowd of family and friends on hand that he started with YCSO over 30 years ago working in the jail. He told the graduates, “This is not just a job, but you have joined a profession, one which changed my life, and it will change yours also.”
He encouraged the newcomers to always put integrity first, and to own up to mistakes they make and learn from them. He also stressed having a strong dedication to fellow workers, and to the federal and state constitutions. And he told the graduates to remember that the people they will be in charge of are human beings, not just inmates.
Commander Boelts also told the grads that they “work to live”, not the other way around, and they need to be present for and enjoy their family and friends when not on the job.
Class Leader Karbassion told those gathered for the ceremony, “Today is not an end, but marks a beginning, one filled with responsibility, purpose, and the opportunity to make a difference. This is not just about enforcing rules, but also to recognize the humanity of the individuals under our care. It’s about being a beacon of strength, stability and professionalism.” He added, “We must let empathy be our guide and integrity our constant companion. The journey starts now, but the real work lies ahead.”
Miranda-Torres was awarded Overall Honor Recruit, as well as Physical Fitness Improvement and Achievement. Johnson won the academy award for Academic Achievement."
