Personnel assigned to Special Crimes conduct covert investigations of narcotic use and trafficking and is responsible for investigating cases, and prosecution, related to illegal narcotic activity, and the suppression of narcotics throughout Yavapai County. They conducts follow-up investigation required of cases generated by the Patrol Bureau, and from information provided by citizens of Yavapai County. While street level narcotic enforcement is the most recognized type of activity these Investigators are engaged in, members periodically accompany Sheriff Waugh to community meetings, where they inform the public of drug activity in their neighborhoods. They also provide citizens with information to identify illegal drug activity in their communities.
Special Crimes personnel enjoy a good working relationship with several local, state, and Federal agencies and task forces involved in the enforcement of drug laws. While the task of narcotic enforcement becomes more difficult and challenging each year, personnel assigned to Special Crimes accepts that challenge to fight to achieve a drug-free environment for the citizens of Yavapai County. The most common narcotic drugs seized by Special Crimes include Amphetamine/Methamphetamine, Marijuana, Cocaine (Powder and Rock), Heroin (Black Tar), Psilocybin mushrooms and Ecstasy. In addition, the Criminal Investigations Bureau currently assigns two (2) Investigators and one (1) Secretary Senior to the local “Partners Against Narcotics Trafficking” task force (P.A.N.T.).
